To make sure the setting was correct and true to Tolkien’s books, the developers talked to Warner Bros. Tolkien experts and Peter Jackson, who directed The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies. They also got help from Weta Workshop, which gave them advice on the special effects. Dan Abnett was hired to write lines for the Orcs in the game, and Christian Cantamessa was in charge of writing the game itself. The combat in the game was largely based on the Batman: Arkham series. Monolith had tried out the nemesis system in a canceled Batman game based on the Christopher Nolan movies. The nemesis system was based on how people played sports games and role-playing games with pen and paper. It was meant to give each player their own unique story and make the Orcs characters memorable through gaming.
