Adventurers and wizards both like to mess around with strange glowing objects when they find them in ruins. They do this because they think they can get something from them, like knowledge about the magical forces that created the world, a brand-new sword, or even, God forbid, the power of friendship. No matter how many skulls are carved into it.
Yes, magic might be better prepared and sometimes do the right thing. But that doesn’t change the fact that they’re playing around with powerful but dangerous abilities, and when they fail, they fail very badly. Most of the time, their mistakes change the world around them. Often in the shape of a smoking hole. Or something large and creepy.
